I recently read a book called Mindset by Carol Dweck. She is a Stanford University psychologist and she came up with a really interesting way of thinking of how we learn.

When we take on new activities, when we try to learn new skills or when we are thrust into different new situations, which is pretty much all the time now as technology is constantly changing, the world becomes  kind of a crazy place. The more flexible that we can be, the more we learn, the better our life is going to be.

This is a great book about opening up your horizons and helping you to believe in yourself when you are learning new skills. Highly recommended! Check out the video for more.

Do you remember when you were a new agent and how fun it was to be out with buyers looking at properties?

I still have that! Here are the two main reasons it’s so much fun for me:

  1. I like people – all kinds, all ages, all walks of life – and I thoroughly enjoy meeting and spending time with them and chatting about all sorts of things, not just real estate.
  2. I like looking at properties – all kinds – even the junkers! Sure, it’s amazing when we get to see a super-cool listing, but sometimes it’s great fun to laugh about the weird and ugly ones, too.

The truth is, out of all the different tasks we do every single day, there’s nothing I’d rather be doing than showing properties to clients whom I like and enjoy being with. It’s fun!

If you don’t feel the same, that’s an awful shame.

I was talking to a newer agent the other day and she was lamenting the fact that she had buyer clients who “just couldn’t make up their minds.” I asked her how many properties she had shown them.

“Seven.”

Wow. Big hairy deal! This agent needs to change her attitude and start enjoying the experience.

A little more discussion revealed that her main focus was to collect a commission cheque… as soon as possible.

I’m here to tell you if that’s your focus, your clients can sense it and you’re probably self-sabotaging. What you really need is a major attitude adjustment – not a commission cheque.

If you’re thinking, “Easy for you to say, Ted,” that’s a fair statement, especially if you are struggling financially.

But bear with me, please. Continuing from the topic from earlier columns – mindset –

I’m going to repeat my favourite quote one more time: “Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value.”  – Albert Einstein

Near the end of his life in 1955, this was advice that Einstein gave to a young man who asked him what he should do with his life. What I take from that quote is that success naturally follows if you concentrate your energy on doing an excellent job for your clients (rather than chasing after commission cheques).

I’m not saying that you should just suck it up, and show your clients 100 properties, and stumble around at their beck and call. That’s not being a person of value.

If you genuinely want to create value, you need to be willing to learn and master new skills around setting proper expectations, taking charge in a natural non-bossy way, using your time effectively and guiding your clients through the process with effective systems and procedures, so they will feel eager to pull the trigger when the time is right.

If you’re a newer agent, try to adjust your mindset to learn something from every property you show, and every experience you have interacting with clients. This increased knowledge will pay off in the future, even if you’re not collecting a commission cheque right away.

I’m still learning every day. What about you?

Your income is controlled by your mindset https://realestatemagazine.ca/your-income-is-controlled-by-your-mindset/ https://realestatemagazine.ca/your-income-is-controlled-by-your-mindset/#respond Fri, 10 Aug 2018 04:00:42 +0000 https://realestatemagazine.ca/your-income-is-controlled-by-your-mindset/ Your mindset is a “mental currency” and money and mindset are related more than you think they are. Your mindset is a “mental currency” and money and mindset are related more than you think they are.

Think of your mindset as being a currency that you are investing in. Your thoughts are mental currency and every day you invest in them little by little. Because of this investment, you get money back. That outcome directly depends on your input – the quality of your thoughts in this case.

You may have a job or a business that you are working on every day and so you are investing in it by putting in all that effort. If you are investing in having more money, then you can’t go around trying to skip out on tipping at restaurants or buying the cheapest thing when you are comparison shopping. You can’t go around buying used vehicles instead of new ones.

If you are guilty of doing so, then you have a thought process that says, “Hey buying a new car is a rip-off. As soon as I drive off the lot I’m going to lose 30 per cent of the value.”

This thought process eventually takes you far from the growth mindset you wish to achieve.

Think of your thoughts as a mental currency. If they are well targeted towards what you want, and your beliefs are positive in that regard, the ball is in your court. But if you keep acting and going against your wishes, you don’t even see where the ball is.

Think about every time you need to fill your car up with gas. You may look at the rising gas prices and get upset about it. Or you get upset because you bought gas yesterday and today the prices went down.

This also happens when you buy something and then you see the same thing at a better, more reasonable price. It gets you thinking, should I return what I bought and get it for a better price? Those are the kinds of conversations that we have with ourselves every single day that waste our mental currency and push money away from us.

A friend of mine once told me that while he is grocery shopping that he has a conversation with money about the product he’s buying. When he’s looking at two products with a difference of only a dollar, his mind makes a big deal out of it, which in turn causes him suffering and pushes money away.

How to achieve a growth mindset? The ATM principle

It’s not what you think it is. You won’t be stealing an ATM. I am talking about Automatic Transformative Mantra (ATM).

Marie Forleo gave me this idea and it’s absolutely fantastic. Basically, it’s affirmations – things that you say to yourself. You are always talking to yourself and if you talk to yourself in a way that is going to produce the kind of life that you want, you can generate the kind of money and lifestyle you want and get into the growth mindset in the long run.

If you use affirmations positively on a regular basis, your mind, especially the part that is ruling you, the subconscious mind, will generate the results that you want.

The subconscious mind produces 96 to 98 per cent of your results, behaviours and habits. It’s giving you everything that you want or don’t want in your life. And you can program it for the things you want, especially in terms of money and mindset.

Think of it from this standpoint. What if you said to yourself an affirmation like: “Large, rich, opulent, lavish financial surprises are coming to me now and I am grateful.”

Edwene Gaines gave me this affirmation. She has a great book on this topic – The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity. Her affirmation is one that you can say to yourself and convince yourself that you will have large, rich, opulent, lavish financial surprises. That, in turn, will change your beliefs.

To get into a growth mindset you need to adopt some changes in your mental attitude towards what you are doing in life.

Napoleon Hill says, “Conceive, believe and achieve.”

Conceive is where you get the idea.

Believe is where you affirm. You change your mind and think about the things that you want.

Achieve is how you get it. You act. You get emotionally involved, act and get the results that you want.

Your mind is creating mental currency all the time, You have your ATM, you have your affirmations and then you put them into practice.

Edwene practiced saying her mantra regularly, but then one time she had a complete falling out where there was a severe storm and her event was cancelled. She owed thousands of dollars to pay for all of her expenses and her employees and she did not know what to do.

She then saw a casino outside her window as the storm was blowing all around her and decided to go there. She put 25 cents into a slot machine and ended up winning $10,000. All of her problems were solved.

She had a problem and the solution came right to her. Why? Because her mindset believed that large, rich, opulent lavish financial surprises were coming to her and she is grateful for them. That is exactly what she got.

She had a problem and a solution was given to her almost automatically. Now it’s in your hands and you get to choose what you want to conceive, make your mind believe and achieve.

You have the power to get your mind running with a growth mindset. You now know exactly how you want to change your money mindset to achieve what you actually want in life. How you turn tables in your favour now that you have his knowledge is totally up to you.

What’s the fastest way to double your productivity and start getting twice the success in your business? Why do certain people make more money and have more free time and lots more energy?

Here are three mindsets for success and productivity:

Mindset No. 1: Speed of implementation.

You want to get from where you are now to where you want to be fast, so you need to bridge the gap between what you know and what you’re doing by implementing quickly. By staying in your comfort zone and settling for what you have today, you will remain the same because there’s no action. However, if you implement your ideas fast, you will break your old ways and create new mindsets that you can expand on.

Studies have shown that the common denominator among successful people is speed of the implementation. When they had a great idea or great insight, they put it to work in their business right away. Most people think about it, they go learn some more stuff; they talk to people about it. They don’t actually go and implement it – and they miss out!

Why do you want to implement things quickly? Because if you don’t, some other ideas are going to come along and you’re going to forget and it’s not going to hardwire itself into your mind. It’s not going to become part of your unconscious, your habits. When you implement and actually do something in the world, you get feedback because that’s the law of cause-and-effect. The world gives you feedback because it’s based on experiential learning – the most powerful kind of learning.

Write down “speed of implementation” on a Post-It-Note and put it on your computer monitor.

Mindset No. 2:  The critical counter-intuitive.

What this means is that the next-best step you need to take in order to succeed is usually not obvious and is illogical. It’s generally counter-intuitive, meaning it’s the opposite of what you normally would do.

I first learned about this when I started my practice as a coach. When I started out, I had the opportunity to be mentored by Bob Proctor to learn his Thinking Into Results coaching system. I had been recently fired from a job and had no income. Justifying the investment of $20,000 to learn how to coach didn’t make sense. But as you can guess I went against my critical counter-intuitive mind and invested in my future.

The next step on the path to your success is not logical and it’s probably counter-intuitive.

Mindset No. 3: The mastermind.

The secret of the super successful is that they’re in a mastermind. It is the best way to obtain unlimited results. A mastermind is an alliance of two or more people that come together to creatively put their energy behind one definite purpose.

It’s like a fighter jet. It is powerless until it has engines. When you install them and press the start button, the plane then can lift off the ground and fly.  Likewise, each of us needs the other to bring out our highest and best talents, resources and abilities.

Masterminding is the blending together of mind power and action to obtain unlimited results. None of us can be totally successful alone. You have to do it yourself, but you can’t do it alone.

We need other people to support and energize our goals and discover the best that’s within us and in the group. We need others to lift us up and to see more than we see in ourselves. We need others to support and work with us, encourage and empower us and to help us fulfill our goals within the mastermind.

I see people get stuck in their logical thinking mind and their paralysis of analysis or say, “I’m going to go and study productivity for three years before I do anything” or, “I’m going to take two years to get my life in order before I can do anything because I want to get everything in the exact right place.” These are usually the wrong decisions.

Here’s the bottom line: success isn’t a game where you take one action and then you are successful. It involves planting many seeds of success and then putting them together so that success emerges from them.

There isn’t going to be one single technique, principal or magic pill that will cause success, it will be all these elements working together that will create success for you.

I’ve done a considerable amount of research and years of testing on a variety of methods to improve my productivity. I discovered that the most significant thing you can do for your overall productivity and success mindset and made a five-minute video for you.  Watch it here: www.danlefave.com/productivity/
